Day 1- Cairo
Today opens with a visit to the ruins of Memphis, capital of the Egyptian Old Kingdom more than 4,000 years ago. Much of this ancient city has been swallowed by the sands, but relics include a stunning marble sphinx and a statue of the great Ramses II. Your next stop is Sakkara, dominated by the stepped pyramid of Zoser I, the oldest stone structure in the world, but, after lunch, the high point of today's sightseeing is your visit to the pyramids at Giza. Visit the famed Sphinx and the Sun Boat Museum, housing two funeral barques discovered in 1954, and for a grand finale you can opt for a Son et Lumiere performance at the pyramids.
Day 2 - Cairo
This morning, a tour of the Egyptian Antiquities Museum reveals an unbelievable treasury of archaeological finds, including the riches of Tutankhamun and the Mummies Room, housing the mummies of Ramses II and other Pharaohs. After lunch enter the world of medieval Cairo, visiting the imposing hilltop Citadel built by Saladin in the 12th century. Within its walls stand the splendid 19th century Mosque of Mohammed Ali with its soaring dome and graceful minarets, and the Sultan Hassan Mosque. Then plunge into the winding alleys of the Khan el Khalili Bazaar.
Day 3 - Cairo/Aswan
This morning you fly to Aswan, gateway to the Upper Nile, to join Sun Boat IV, spending the next four nights afloat. You leave early, but will have plenty of time to relax on board before your afternoon felucca cruise around the islands of the Nile aboard one of the vessels which have plied the river for centuries, returning for chilled drinks and afternoon tea, with a cocktail reception on board before dinner. Optionally from Cairo fly on to Abu Simbel, a short hop, where your guided visit to the fantastic temples, saved from the rising waters of Lake Nasser and guarded by colossal images of Ramses II, will be an enduring memory. Fly back to Aswan in time for the afternoon felucca cruise and dinner.
.
Day 4 - Aswan/Edfu
This morning you visit the Temple of Philae, on its own island, see the granite quarries where huge obelisks were hewn from the rock, and tour the High Dam before setting sail down river to Kom Ombo. Here you'll visit the great Temple of Sobek, sacred to Egypt's crocodile-headed deity, then cruise on to Edfu, where you moor tonight.
Day 5 - Edfu/Luxor
After breakfast, explore the Temple of Horus, the hawk-headed sun god. This afternoon you sail to Esna, to visit the Temple of ram-headed Khnum, the god of the cataracts. Back on board once again, enjoy a sunset over the mountains of the west bank whilst you cruise towards Luxor.
Day 6 - Luxor
Today your journey reaches its climax with morning visits to the west bank of the Nile and the Valley of the Kings, and the impressive temples at Medinet Habu where hundreds of ancient richly decorated tombs are tunnelled into the sides of hills. Make photo-stops at the cliffside Temple of Hatshepsut. This afternoon visit the huge temple complex of Karnak and the many-columned temple of Luxor, before returning to Sun Boat IV.
Day 7 - Luxor/Cairo
After breakfast, take your flight to Cairo and a last night at the Conrad International or Four Seasons, with time for independent sightseeing and shopping. Alternatively transfer across the desert to stay for a few days to relax at The Oberoi at Sahl Hasheesh on the Red Sea.
