Ballindalloch Castle, is first and foremost, the much loved family home of the Macpherson-Grants. It is one of the very few privately owned Castles to be lived in continuously by its original family. Staying here could not be further from your standard "rent-a-castle" and is truely a rare privilege. The castle exemplifies the transition from the stark tower house necessary in 16th century Scotland to the elegant and comfortable country house so loved of the Victorians in the Highlands.

The Ballindalloch Castle Golf Course nestles amidst mature trees on the banks of the River Avon and is open to all. HISTORY

The tower house, built orginally on the traditionally Z-plan design, survived burning by the Marquis of Montrose in 1645 and has been altered and enlarge by successive ancestors over the centuries. The most noteable being General James Grant who in 1777 added two wings, the Drawing Room and Laird's Smoking Room in the south wing. He built the north wing to specifically house his favourite chef! The 2nd Baronet, Sir John Macpherson-Grant bought Spanish paintings, which are acknowledged to be the most important private collection of 17th-century Spanish paintings. The 3rd Baronet Sir George Macpherson-Grant is remembered for his founding work ,in 1860, on the famous herd of Ballindalloch Aberdeen Angus cattle. Today Clare Macpherson-Grant Russell is not only the 19th Laird but also the first 'Lady Laird'.
