STAFF

The family traces its ancestry back to the de Baliols who came over with William the Conqueror in 1066. The de Baliol's connections with Scotland began with the coronation of John de Baliol (born 1292) as King of Scotland. William de Baliol fought with William Wallace to whom he was related and as a result lost his lands in England. Alexander Baillie's great grandmother, Baroness Burton, being titled in her own right, married a Baillie of Dochfour, thus bringing the title into the family.
Today Dochfour is set in mature parkland and boasts stunning views over Loch Ness. The current house was rebuilt following the Jacobite rebellion of 1745. The part of the house facing Loch Ness is therefore Georgian and the house was then significantly extended in the Victorian and Edwardian eras. The house and garden are mentioned in Queen Victoria's Highland Journals. Prince Albert reported to the Queen that he found it 'Beautiful, the house elegant, with a fine garden'. The garden contains some magnificent specimen trees which have been authenticated as some of the tallest in the Highlands.
