HISTORY
In 1655, Gilmerton was purchased by Francis Kinloch, a man of wealth and influence, a Burgess, MP and in 1677 Lord Provost of Edinburgh. In 1686 he was knighted for lending ?300 to James, Duke of York, to enable him to travel extensively in Scotland. Standing in several thousand acres of prime arable land in one of the most attractive parts of East Lothian, Gilmerton is an imposing Georgian house with some fifty rooms. It was the death in 1795 of the 5th Baronet, Sir David Kinloch, that hurtled his family into the public eye in less than happy fashion. Sir david was murdered by his half brother Archibald-Gordon on the staircase of Gilmerton, having been shot with two pistols.
A very public and lengthy trial followed and it transpired that 15 years earlier, Sir Archibald had been serving in the West Indies with the army and had contracted tropical fever which left him "deprived of his senses". Sir Archibald was eventually confined in safe custody for life and he died in 1800, having been cared for by his family and provided for by their trustees. Gilmerton House remains today as it was then. The marble hall, the parlour now a dining room, the stone parlour now a pantry and the great staircase, scene of that tragedy, are all there, as are the Kinlochs of Gilmerton, landowners and farmers and living in greater tranquility than their forebears.
