INTRODUCTION

Glen House is run as a private home by the Hon.Tessa Tennant and her colleague, Caroline Gordon Duff. They welcome people from around the world to share in some of the magic of the house and the surrounding countryside. The estate can arrange a number of different events both on the property and within the area and far removed from the sterile world of convention centres and hotel chains. Glen House offers the rich atmosphere of a great family home combined with excellent business facilities, discreet service and superb cuisine. " You do not deserve any credit for the beauties of this place, because you could not have found an ugly spot to put the house." - W. E. Gladstone

HISTORY

The Glen was built for Charles Tennant, the 29 year old entrepreneur, whose chemical company at the end of the last century "was larger than du Ponts". The house is an imposing example of what is known as Scottish Baronial and was begun in 1851 to the designs of David Bryce. Its hallmarks - turrets, towers and forbidding high stone walls are generally associated with Balmoral but in fact The Glen predates the Royal residence by several years. More recently it has been lived in by the incredibly colourful and charismatic Colin Tennant (Lord Glenconner) and his wife Lady Anne, daughter of the 5th Earl of Leicester.
Colin, nicknamed Lord of the Revels, spends much of his time in the West Indies and developed the Caribbean retreat of Mustique for the likes of Princess Margaret and Mick Jagger. Lord Glenconner is now working his magic on a patch of St Lucia and his daughter-in-law Tessa, whose son will inherit the estate, administers The Glen. It has been the scene of many wild parties and has entertained everyone from Prime Ministers to Royalty and even Oscar Wilde over the years. Decorated in a fascinating way by Syrie Maughan, wife of Somerset, staying at the Glen is a truly unique experience and a journey into a past age of "noble splendour".
