Harburn prides itself on not being a hotel and this is something their guests particularly appreciate. There are no dining room times to be adhered to and above all, no one else you have to share it with. Harburn has excellent cuisine, 8 bedrooms all with private bathrooms and there are a further 16 bedrooms in other cottages on the estate, again all with their own bathrooms.

INTRODUCTION

Close to the city of Edinburgh, Harburn house is owned by Humphrey and Rozi Spurway, who have restored a once neglected Georgian mansion in the middle of their 3,000 acre sporting estate. Harburn was originally built in 1804 for Alexander Young and was bought in 1875 by Thomas Barr, the great-grandfather of Humphrey Spurway.

HISTORY

Harburn House was built in 1804, after the original mansion house had been blown up by Oliver Cromwell. The stables, of which much still remain are situated two hundred yards to the north of Harburn, next to the walled garden which dates back to 1830 along with the original dovecote. There is also a 14ft stone monument commerorating the last visit in 1832 of Charles 10th of France, who was a family friend and a very frequent visitor to Harburn. In 1875 the entire estate was bought by Thomas Barr, the great-grandfather of Humphrey Spurway, who with his wife Rozi have totally renovated the house and estate, which now incorporates a very extensive Christmas tree plantation, a commercial shoot and stunning

Shooting 
Harburn organises 1-5 day shoots, 150-400 birds per day comprising pheasants, duck and partridge. Roe deer stalking can be organised locally. Clay pigeon shooting and falconry can also be organised on the estate.
