HISTORY

Hatton Castle has been in the Duff family for nearly 300 years. The first Alexander Duff of Hatton bought the dilapidated Place of Balquholly which had been in the Mowatt family since the early 1300's. It was the second Alexander Duff who, in 1745 built the Castle in its present form and renamed it Hatton Lodge. The Lodge was held by his widow - Lady Anne Duff - until 1805, but she too allowed the building to fall into disrepair and the house again had to be restored and altered in 1815.
There are particularly fine Adam and similar contemporary design carved ornamentals, circular tower rooms of exceptional character, pine panelling and doors of merit. Furthermore, the situation is notable and really beautiful policies have been maintained to a very high standard. There is an outstanding walled garden with a remarkable stone wall with beehive niches. Having decided some years ago, that Hatton would remain a family home, David James-Duff has after much repair and improvement opened the house to guests.
