HISTORY

Although there has been a house at Kincardine since the 1780's, it was the present owner's Great Grandmother, Mrs. Mary Pickering, who rebuilt the mansion house in the early 1890's. A socialite in London, Mrs. Pickering was well connected and moved in the circles of the pre-Raphaelite and the Arts and Crafts set. Within the house there are fine examples of tiles by her famous cousin William de Morgan. Mrs. Pickering was an acquaintance of Andrew Carnegie, the Scots-American iron and steel Baron and they corresponded as they were both building large houses in Scotland at the same time. It is interesting to compare the American with the home grown approach to bathrooms. While Carnegie built more than a dozen suites of rooms at Skibo Castle, Mrs. Pickering built Kincardine with only three bathrooms. It took nearly a century for Kincardine to catch up!

There are a couple of interesting literary connections in the family. Andrew Bradford's Great-Great-Great-Grand Aunt was Jane Austen and there are artefacts and portraits from her family home now at Kincardine. Not to be outdone Nicky Bradford's Great-Great-Great-Great- Grandfather was Henry Fielding, author of Tom Jones.
