HISTORY

The family name of of the Earl of Seafield is Ogilvie-Grant. The Ogilvie family belongs to Cullen and district, and the Grant family to Strathspey. The lands of Castle Grant, Kinveachy and parts of Abernethy, which now form the Strathspey estate, have been Clan Grant territory since the thirteenth century. In 1735 Sir Ludovick Grant of Grant married Lady Margaret Ogilvie, the eldest daughter of the second Earl of Seafield. Their son Sir James Grant of Grant, "the good Sir James" was responsible in 1776 for founding Grantown-on-Spey.
When the 11th Earl of Seafield died of wounds received in action in 1915, the barony of Strathspey and chieftainship of the Clan Grant went to his brother Sir Trevor Ogilvie Grant and the Scottish peerages to his daughter Nina Caroline as Countess of Seafield. On her death in 1969 her son, Viscount Reidhaven, succeeded as the 13th Earl. The Seafield family has always taken an active interest in the management of the estate and this personal involvement continues to this day.
