HISTORY

The first house at Manderston was built by Mr. Dalhousie Weatherstone in the 1790's but in 1855 it was brought by Sir Richard Miller, a wealthy trader and Member of Parliament. It was his grandson Sir James, described as a "Perfect Edwardian gentleman", who married the sister of Lord Curzon, the famous Viceroy of India, who remodelled the house. Sir James asked the architect John Kinross for a house as coolly elegant as neo classical Kedleston, the Curzon home, and large enough for the army of servants necessary for Edwardian comfort and grand enough for entertaining.
When John Kinross enquired as to how much he could spend on the rebuilding, he was told that "it simply didn't matter" - an architects dream come true! The present Lord Palmer, whose father was the last chairman of Huntly and Palmer Foods before it was bought by Nabisco, has bought the house into the 21st Century and he and his wife Cornelia provide every comfort for their guests.
