HISTORY

The history of Myres estate is well documented from the early 15th century when James 1st of Scotland granted Robert Coxwell possession of the South Quarter of Auchtermuchty. It included the portion which was afterwards distinguished as Myres. On his death, his widow married John Scrymgeour and it was his gradnson who built the old part of the Castle in 1530. In 1611 the Castle passed out of the Scrymgeour family and for over 250 years it was owned by some of Scotland's famous family names - Patterson, Moncrief, Skene and Bruce.
In 1887 the Castle was acquired by James Ogilvy Fairlie, third son of the Fairlies of that Ilk who came from Ayrshire and whose family lived at Myres and in the 1960's extensively restored it, until Captain Fairlie finally sold out in 1999 to Mr and Mrs Jonathan White. The new owners also purchased much of its contents and have lovingly refurbished the Castle, introducing a lot of modern day facilities and genrally bringing its comfort level up to 21st Century requirements.
