HISTORY
No one can be absolutely certain when the first dwelling was built but it is believed there was some sort of house on this site from the early 1700's, if not before. From about 1800, the estate belonged to the Campbells of Glenlyon and early maps describe the present site of the mansion house as 'croft of Pitcastle', a large farming complex. In the latter part of the 1800's, the estate was acquired by Guthrie of Birnam, who reconstructed the house in Scottish baronial style (an example of the well known 'Balmoral' effect).
In 1919, the estate was bought by John N Kyd, who further improved the estate by adding running water and electric light powered by a hydro electric scheme to all the houses, which was then a novelty. He was a noted collector of clocks and paintings and in fact Pitcastle was known as 'the house of clocks'. Of his paintings, a number passed into the Burrell collection, and some of the Mactaggart seascapes in the National Gallery in Edinburgh once hung at Pitcastle. The estate remained in the Kyd family until 1989.
