INTRODUCTION
Tillypronie has a legendary reputation for providing hospitality. As long ago as 1878 the American writer Henry James wrote of Tillypronie as "this supremely comfortable house - lying deep among the brown and purple moors" and described " the glorious view of sweeping hills and gleaming lochs that lies forever before the windows".
The house is peculiarly elastic. It can be cosy and accessible with just a small party, but the dining room can comfortably sit 18. Besides the Drawing Room, Morning Room and club-like Smoking Room, there is a children's playroom and a billiard room with full sized table and juke box.
HISTORY
The house dates from 1867, when Queen Victoria laid the foundation stone. The estate, as it then was, belonged to the family of the Queen's physician, Sir James Clark, who was instrumental in introducing Queen Victoria to Deesdie and Balmoral. Additions were made to the house and the more formal terraced gardens were laid out in the 1920s, when Tillypronie was owned by the Sir Thomas Royden. Chairman of the Cunard-White Star line. Since 1952 it has been the Astor family's Scottish home.
ACTIVITIES
Tillypronie is a traditional Scottish estate and offers a rich variety of countryside and sporting activities. There is salmon and trout fishing on the River Don and a number of trout lochs. There are lunch huts and bothies dotted about the estate which are ideal for picnics.
Many historic castles and gardens including Balmoral, Craigievar and Crathes are within easy reach. There are also plenty of fine golf courses in the area, including a pretty nine hole course in the nearby village of Tarland.
