HISTORY
The lands of Winton were mentioned in a charter of 1169 by William the Lion and there have only been 3 principal families living in the house since it was first built in 1480. The first family, the Setons included Chancellors of Scotland, and Masters of the Royal Household in the time of James VI. For their support in the Jacobite uprising, their lands were forfeited to the Crown and the next family to buy Winton was the Hamilton-Nisbets. Winton became part of an extraordinary inheritance including some of the best golfing country in Scotland on the coast of Gullane. The marriage to Henry Ogilvy in 1888 brought a highland clan into the Winton story and Sir Francis is the 14th Baronet of Inverquaharity and the 4th generation of Ogilvys at Winton.
After being burnt by Henry VIII, Winton was restored for the 3rd Earl of Winton by William Wallace, the King's master mason. His stone carvings are quite unique and the fine plaster ceilings are nationally acclaimed. The Hamilton-Nisbets later employed the architect John Paterson to add to the house, making it suitable for entertaining on a grand scale.
