Set amongst the spectacular fir trees of France’s ‘La Petite Toscane’, little Tuscany, the Bastide St Mathieu is a beautifully restored country mansion nestled in the foothills below Grasse. There are five beautiful individually decorated guest suites set on two floors, all en-suite and themed by colour, some with separate sitting rooms and others with private terraces. Each is fully equipped with their own telephone numbers, high-speed internet access and satellite TV. There are two rather simpler single rooms, one on each floor, both en-suite shower rooms ideal for staff or children.

The traditional stone dining room and charming terrace are perfect places to enjoy local fare, with a professional-standard kitchen perfect for keen cooks. The grounds include a large sun terrace and extensive gardens, gloriously planted with olive and fruit trees, lavender, oleander and bougainvillea, sheltering a boules court and swimming pool. Close by are a choice of restaurants including the Michelin rated Moulin de Mougins and Bastide de St Antoine, as well as countless golf, tennis, skiing, beach and horse riding opportunities.

OPINION

While this villa is a stunning setting for a family holiday with older children, the main bedrooms are all double and aimed at mature tastes, with Ralph Lauren linens and bathrobes, and might be more appreciated by groups of grown-ups. With beautiful views over ' La Petite Toscane' and luxury accommodation, a holiday at Bastide St Matthieu will be most memorable.
