Macennere is a lovely stone-built farmhouse located in a very secluded and tranquil position in the hills of Lucca, covered in ivy and set amongst olive groves and fruit trees. The house has been restored and very tastefully decorated by a British interior decorator for his own use, and only rented for parts of the year. He has used authentic Tuscan materials, such as antique cotto floors and beamed ceilings, and has furnished it in a very attractive, rustic, yet elegant style. On the ground floor there is an Ottoman style study, a dining room, kitchen, walk-in larder, and large sitting room, with fireplace, that opens onto a pergola area and the loggia furnished for dining. The master bedroom is also on this floor, with a four-poster bed and en-suite facilities. On the first floor are a further two double bedrooms with four-poster beds, two twin bedrooms and one large bathroom.

Both to the front and back of the house there are outside dining areas with built-in barbeques and an 12m x 6m swimming pool. In a 1996 issue of 'World of Interiors' it was given a 14 page spread. Since then, despite many imitators, it remains one of the most stunning Italian villas, with standards painstakingly maintained.

OPINION

In our opinion Macennere is one of our most attractive villas offering four poster beds in three of the bedrooms. This villa's one kilometre access track through a forest leading to the house is not suitable for cars with low suspensions or nervous drivers.

Three double bedrooms, two twins. Maximum ten guests.

STAFF

Maid service included three hours a day, three days a week.

S. Alessio (shops) 15 mins drive, Lucca 20 mins, Pisa (airport) 40 mins, Florence 120 mins.
