Set in five acres of landscaped grounds stretching down to the Indian Ocean, Claughton was designed by the leading Sri Lankan architect Goeffrey Bawa to take advantage of the wonderful views overlooking two crescent bays. It offers a winning combination of luxury and privacy. The property has one double and two twin rooms, each with their own en-suite bathroom and private courtyard. Extra beds can be provided for additional guests on request. The large split-level dining and living area is an airy space open on three sides. Outside, the gardens run down to the large freshwater swimming pool. Beyond the pool a path leads through the gardens to give direct access to the beach. Manager and staff speak English, and the cooks are equally happy preparing European meals and local curries, or cooking barbeques by the pool. A boat can be arranged for boat trips and snorkelling with diving nearby, from November to March. If you have your own driver there is separate accommodation available, while local taxis can easily be arranged.

OPINION

We think this villa is perfect for families or groups of friends who wish to experience Sri Lanka quietly, cocooned in five acres of private grounds and with direct beach access. The airy living space is open on three sides, which is perfect for enjoying the tropical climate.

One double and two twin rooms. Plus extra beds on request. Maximum eight guests.

STAFF

Manager, full staff including housekeepers, chefs and gardeners. Staff will provide three meals daily including water , tea and coffee. Other drinks are extra.

DISTANCES

All approximate: Colombo four/five hours drive, Tangalla 15 minutes drive, Uda Welawe and Yala national parks 120 minutes drive, direct beach access through the gardens.
