The last private house designed by renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa, Mahawella is an elegant building looking out over a broad lawn that reaches down to the near-deserted beach. The central sitting area has comfortable sofas looking out over the emerald pool. There’s a fully-equipped kitchen that can also be used by guests fixing their own meals or cocktails but there’s also a resident chef. Breakfast is provided every day, while ingredients for lunch and dinner can be bought at the markets in Tangalla or from fishermen who bring lobster, crab and seafood to the gate. The elegant architecture maintains a cool and comfortable atmosphere, with plenty of space to relax in peace. Three of the bedrooms are downstairs all overlooking the sea with one also looking inland over a small lagoon, and while all have en-suite bathrooms and showers, two bedrooms also share a private, sunken outdoor bath. There is also a small single bedroom for a nanny and/or child, sharing a bathroom with the twin on the first floor. The master bedroom and a twin bedroom, also en-suite, are on the first floor, sharing a broad, sea-facing veranda.
